ENTREPRENEURIAL PITFALL: SUCCESS BY ALL MEANS IS NOT SUCCESS.

Posted on Posted in Entrepreneurship

The hunger for success in building sustainable businesses and the fame associated with it have caused entrepreneurs, business owners and managers as well as founder of organizations to go every length to achieve desired fame and make money including doing that BY ALL MEANS.

Although it is almost inevitable to achieve some level of success without leaving behind some relations and associates which may cause disaffection, it is unethical to deliberately burn bridges and walk over others to attain achievements.

Many of us do not know all the partners who started Apple Inc. Most of us know Steve Jobs and quite a few of us knows about his other partner, 66-year old Stephen G. Wozniak. Very few know that when the company was incorporated on April 1, 1976, it had three co-founders. The third relinquished his 10% stake which would have made him about $62 billion richer today.

This third widely unknown 81-year old other partner of Apple Inc, Ronald G. Wayne sold his stake for $800, twelve (12) days after the incorporation and amazingly, today he says “I have never regretted the move”.

Wayne in an interview with CNNMoney echoed an attitude that have characterized many entrepreneurs in our time and eating into managers of organizations and institutions. He said “If I stayed at Apple I would have probably ended up the richest man in the cemetery”, he continued “Once Steve (Jobs) determined where to be, the last place you would want to be is between him and where he was going, or you’d end up with footprints on your head”. This character seem to be the hallmark of most entrepreneurs who don’t mind ‘using’ people for what they want and some will ‘dump’ them or find an eliminating tactics to do away with people who stand in their way to attaining fame or success or who they have gain what they want from them.

I have witnessed managers and business owners who will sacrifice others to attain what they desire with impunity. Once a very respectable CEO told me “if you want to succeed, you will have to walk over people to reach what you desire”. Interestingly, these are some of the advises some ‘celebrated’ entrepreneurs seem to be dishing out to young and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Again many employees are going through all sort of inhuman treatment from supervisors and business owners just to keep their jobs. It is even worse when it is hard to find jobs; one has no option than to remain in whatever circumstance. People are dying from these abuses and others are attracting all manner of sickness. Incidentally, the entrepreneurs, managers and leaders who take this decision are not immune to the side effect and so many have shortened their lived by their actions.

There is a popular tale that point to how people will destroy everything there is to life to gain wealth (and fame) and afterwards turn round to seek life by sacrificing all they labored for. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world and lose his life?

To the young and aspiring entrepreneurs, it is not worth the salt to destroy and burn all the bridges to achieve what you want because those bridges may be needed to transport you for life.

When we started Prime2Prime Ideas Limited, one of the things I use to echo and still re-echo at our morning meetings is that “we do not want to be successful by all means; we rather want to be successful by the right means.

It may be a challenging task to go the right way and value relationships, associates, team members, employees and other stakeholders of life but it certainly will be the road that will build the strong foundation of the business and your life even after your time. Don’t remain in an environment that will push you to be the richest person in the cemetery, like Wayne, seek what you love and do it and value the people who walk the journey with you because they are the factor that will make the journey easy.

In as much as I don’t believe the saying that people don’t leave their jobs, but leave their managers is fully accurate; I believe it is important we understand our purpose in every environment, bearing in mind the people who will aid us.

Success must not be by all means. It must be by the right means!

  12. Different entrepreneurs have non-identical definitions of victory and also the way for quantifying master strokes. But if you think success is only about making money an all costs then you are thinking wrong. Because I don’t know whether I am correct or not, but I think triumph means making a profit by giving top priority to customer satisfaction. However, for some entrepreneurs, victory means spending life in their own ways, whereas for others it is about creating self-reliance and breathing space for themselves through their thoughts and hard work. So, whatever may the perception or way of thinking, every entrepreneur should keep one thing in mind i.e ‘it is important to achieve success, but it is even more considerable to think about the way to grasp it ‘. So, never track a disagreeable way while chasing success.
